10 Minute Custard Toast

What does Custard Toast taste like?

Think of a slice of bread and butter pudding in toast form! Crunchy baked toast crust, with a smooth custardy centre topped with fruit and chocolate chips - what's not to love?!

Can I vary it?

Yes, absolutely! Whilst you can use any bread, softer bread is best as it holds the indentation shape for the custard better. I used brioche as I love the sweetness and it works well with the recipe. With regards to toppings, you can add vanilla extract or other flavourings (just a couple of drops), or change the fruit. Try to avoid high water content fruits as it would prevent the custard from setting properly and go soggy. You could also try stirring a teaspoon of cocoa powder into the custard, or sprinkling some chopped nuts on the top for a lovely toasted nut finish.

Depending on how you are baking this, you will want to start by pre heating your oven or preparing your air fryer. You will also need to line a tray with greaseproof paper.

In a small bowl add the Greek yoghurt, maple syrup and egg. Whisk well until you have a smooth mixture.

Lay your bread on a tray and press down in the centre with the back of a spoon, creating a well with a 1cm edge around the bread. Using the spoon, fill the indentation with the custard mix, taking care not to over fill. Repeat for each slice.

Lastly, slice any berries or fruit, and lay on top of the custard mix. Sprinkle with chocolate chips if using and bake for either 7-9 minutes if you are using an air fryer, or 10-12 minutes if you are using the oven. Appliances vary to keep an eye on them towards the end of the cooking time. You want the custard to be set and the bread to be golden. Enjoy!
