Baked Caramel Spiced Apples

A comfort dish of buttery, caramel, spiced apples that makes the house smell delicious! A great bowl of comfort, served with custard or ice cream . . . or even a warming porridge bowl topping.

Baked Caramel Spiced Apples

Which apples are best for baking?

For baking, choose apple varieties that maintain their shape and offer a balance of sweet-tart flavors. Granny Smiths are ideal for their tartness, while Honeycrisp and Braeburn add sweetness and hold up well when baked. Jonagold, Fuji, and Royal Gala are also excellent choices, depending on your preference for sweetness and texture. My personal preference is Royal Gala.

How long can you keep baked apples slices for?

Baked apple slices can be stored in the fridge for about 3 to 5 days. To keep them fresh, place them in an airtight container or sealable plastic bag after they have cooled to room temperature.

Can you use pears instead of / with apples?

Pears work well with this recipe too, as do peach slices. With peaches I omit the mixed spice and increase the vanilla.

What can you serve Baked Apple Slices with?

Vanilla ice cream, custard, porridge, yoghurt, granola, pancakes or waffles to name just a few.

I used a mixture of Royal Gala and Golden Delicious apples

  • Start by measuring out your ingredients and pre heating your oven to 180c. Get a medium sized baking dish to hand.

Prepare your ingredients as this recipe is fast moving yet simple

  • Core each apple, then cut in half lengthways. Thinly slice each one, trying to keep them all the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Spread out the apples over the base of the oven dish, ensuring they are evenly distributed. Mix your cornflour and water into a paste and pour over the apples, along with the light brown sugar, mixed spice, vanilla bean paste and maple syrup. Mix thoroughly and ensure every apple is well coated and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
  • Once they are ready, remove from the oven and drizzle over the caramel sauce. Add the knob of butter, stir through the apples and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes.

The apples should be tender and golden, in a thick caramel sauce.

  • Remove from the oven and serve warm. Some tasty pairing suggestions are custard, vanilla ice cream or to top porridge bowls.
