Chocolate Orange Doughnut Bread & Butter Pudding

What is Bread and Butter Pudding?

Bread and butter pudding is a classic British dessert that's made from simple, everyday ingredients. It's a comforting and economical dish that's been enjoyed for generations.

Here's how it's typically made:

  1. Bread: Slices of bread, often slightly stale, are buttered and arranged in layers in a baking dish. The crusts are usually left on. You can also use doughnuts, hot cross buns and other bread based ingredients that are past using fresh.
  2. Custard: A rich, creamy custard mixture is made using ingredients like eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and sometimes vanilla or other flavours. This custard mixture is then poured over the bread.
  3. Soaking: The bread is left to soak in the custard mixture for a while. This allows the bread to absorb the liquid, resulting in a moist, tender texture. Don't skip this part - it's the bit that makes it super delicious and 'eggy'!
  4. Baking: The dish is then baked in the oven until the top is golden brown and the custard has set.
  5. Optional Additions: Some variations of bread and butter pudding include adding dried fruits like raisins or currants, or a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon for extra flavour.

When baked, the custard sets to form a soft, creamy texture while the top layer of bread turns golden and slightly crispy. The result is a deliciously comforting dessert that's often served with a drizzle of cream, custard, or a scoop of ice cream.

Bread and butter pudding is known for its nostalgic and homely appeal. It's a versatile dessert that can be adapted with different types of bread, flavoruings, and accompaniments to suit personal preferences. It was a childhood favourite of mine!

Will other doughnuts work?

Absolutely! You could try jam doughnuts and swap the orange segments for dried or fresh berries, custard doughnuts and add banana, and maybe serve with caramel sauce and ice cream. Glazed would work well in a substitution for bread in a traditional dried fruit bread and butter pudding. The beauty of this recipe is you can swap in and out the flavours and ingredients based on what needs using up.

Will this recipe work in the air fryer?

Yes for sure, you may want to shorten the cooking time however, as air fryer cooking times are generally shorter due to the hot air being more concentrated around the food, resulting in faster cooking.
