Date & Walnut Maple Granola

With just five minutes prep time, this is by far my most favourite granola I have ever made - a breakfast table table and it makes the house smell amazing!

Date & Walnut Maple Granola

What is Granola?

Granola is a crunchy mixture of baked rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and often sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, commonly eaten as a breakfast cereal or snack. It's known for its versatility, being enjoyed with milk, yogurt, or as a topping.

Why make your own Granola instead of buying shop bought?

Making your own granola allows you to control the ingredients, tailor the flavours to your preferences, and avoid excessive added sugars that can be found in some store-bought options. It also offers the opportunity to create a fresher and potentially healthier product, with the added bonus of being versatile and helping you use up what's in the cupboard. For example, swapping the walnuts for almonds and dates for apricots is another winning combo!

How long will home made Granola stay fresh for?

Your homemade granola should stay good for a few weeks to a couple of months if you keep it in a cool spot, like a cupboard, in an airtight container. Just make sure it's completely cooled before you stash it. If it's got mostly dry ingredients like oats, nuts, and seeds, it will likely last longer.

Ways to enjoy your granola?

Here are a few tasty ways to enjoy your granola: combine it with yoghurt or milk for a classic breakfast, add a crunch to smoothie bowls, or create a delicious dessert by layering it with yogurt and fruit. You can also snack on it solo, use it as an ice cream topping, or mix it with nuts and dried fruits for a personalized trail mix!

How to make your Granola:

  • Start by pre heating your oven to 160c and lining a tray with greaseproof paper, ensuring it is large enough to evenly spread your granola.
  • Next, weigh out all of your ingredients so they are ready.
  • Combine the oats, dates, walnuts, salt and mixed spice in a large bowl and give it a good stir with a wooden spoon. Next pour in the melted butter and maple syrup. This time you want to give it a really thorough stir to ensure everything is coated before baking.
  • Turn the granola mix out on to your prepared tray and using the back of a spoon, spread it out evenly, pushing down to help it form clusters. Move to the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Once it has finished baking, remove from the oven and allow to cool fully. At this point you can break it up into clusters and store in an airtight jar ready for breakfast!
