Recipe details
Ingredients
- One bagel (I used Red Onion & Chive bagels)
- 1 egg
- 1 slice of cheese (I used Leerdammer)
- 1 slice of parma ham
- Melted Butter
Optional extras to serve: fresh herbs, seasoning, grated parmesan
Instructions
- Firstly, pre heat your oven to 190c and line a tray with greaseproof paper.
- Cut your bagel in half and using a small cookie cutter, or small glass, cut a larger circle out from the centre to make the hole a little bigger.
- Place the bagel on the tray, cut side facing down and brush with melted butter. Then lay the slice of cheese in, ensuring it covers the bagel hole, then lay the ham on top (if you are vegetarian just skip the ham and either leave as it is, oradd another slice of cheese, or a spoon of beans)
- Crack the egg into the well on top of the ham and cheese and transfer to the oven for 8-10 minutes.
- Once the white of the egg has fully set, remove and sprinkle with parmesan, fresh herbs and seasoning . . . enjoy!
How can I vary this recipe to suit my tastes?
This is actually a really versatile recipe if you want to experiment a bit! Some other ideas that work well are:
For scrambled eggs in a bagel hole: scramble an egg in a bowl and pour it into the bagel hole. Cook on a skillet over medium heat until the egg is done.
Try a cheesy version by adding shredded cheese on top of the egg before it sets, covering the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese.
For a veggie-filled option: sauté vegetables like bell peppers or spinach, fill the bagel hole, and crack an egg on top. Cook until the egg is done.
For a bacon-wrapped version: wrap bacon around the bagel hole's edge, securing with toothpicks. Crack an egg in the center and cook until the bacon is crispy, and the egg is done.
Feel free to experiment with toppings and seasonings to create your customised egg in a bagel hole.
And don't forget the bagel . . .
Bagels come in lot's of varieties, so whether you have a lovely local bakery that makes amazing fresh ones, have a shop bought favourite, make your own, or love to boost your protein intake with a protein based bagel, pretty much anything works! I wouldn't recommend the cinnamon and raisin ones for obvious reasons, and I wouldn't recommend bagel thins as they aren't deep enough to hold a robust filling.
